How do you stay creative? I used to think that sitting down and starting with a bunch of thumbnail drawings is the first step in developing a concept but once I got out of school I realized in order to think creatively one needs to make it a part of their everyday lives. It’s not just a step in the design process it is a certain mindset that I had to develop; to mull over, to collect inspiration even when I’m not actively working on a project. I snap photos, take notes, even send myself email notifications when I get inspired in the moment. Often find that these instances create more creative solutions. Sometimes I “play” around with digital elements such as line, shapes etc. without a specific purpose in order to be able to create without feeling the pressure of creating anything specific.
What are you inspired by? I find inspiration in things that surround me, art, fashion history, graphic design history as well as more personal places such as my home and my family.
What is your favorite trend and how have you incorporated it into your designs? My favorite trend of the moment is color, particularly cobalt blue. It is energizing and calming at the same time. I’ve found ways to incorporate it many of my design pieces.
What is the story behind your favorite design in your DENY gallery? Most of my designs in my DENY gallery are part of a series called Next of Kin. The collection was created during a painful time in my life where I experienced unimaginable loss as well as a time of tremendous love. The chaotic designs incorporated finger paintings of my toddler son as well as 16th century still-life florals of the “Memento Mori” subject matter that came from Rijks Museum digital archives.
