This past weekend I watched Midnight in Paris, one of my favorite flicks, and a funny scene with the famous surrealist painter Salvador Dali inspired me to dive into DENY’s own surrealist art. Let me share some history, a.k.a. Google search facts I compiled to help you sound smart at happy hour tonight.
Surrealism definition: A movement in art and literature that flourished in the early twentieth century. Surrealism aimed at expressing imaginative dreams and visions free from conscious rational control. (thanks dictionary.com)
Surrealist imagery: Usually outlandish, uncanny, weird, dreamlike, and “is meant to jolt the viewer out of their comforting assumptions”
Notable Surrealists: Andre Breton (founder of the movement), Max Ernst, Joan Miro, Rene Magiritte, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dali.
